Fly tying school
Lesson 7: LARVA

In Finland the caddisflies (Trichoptera) and their different stages of development are important food for trouts, graylings and other salmonides, especially in summertime. The course of development of caddisflies is following: egg, larva, pupacase, pupa and adult fly.

Dressing:
Hook:
Wet # 10-14
Weight: Leadwire, 3-5 turns on front part of the hook
Rib: Fine copper wire
Backbody: Woolyarn
Legs: Cockfeather herls
Frontbody: Peacock herls

Base the hook to the mid of the bend. Fasten the rib and turn the leadwire on its place

Fasten the woolyarn startin from the front part of the lead

Turn the woolyarn on its place. The backbody should be thickened forward. Remember to leave room for the frontbody and the head.

Fasten the copperwire with turns, which get thinned forward (5-8 turns).

Fasten a bunch of cockherls under the hook in front of the backbody to act as legs.

Fasten two peacock herls in front of the backbody.

Tie the frontbody with peacock herls. Form a nice, small head with the thread and make the whip-finish-knot.
