Aland, Mariehamn 27.-28.2.
Pingo

Slemmern is now covered with  12- 15 cm ice, and it gets thicker every night, when the weather is on minus centigrades. Tolle made in sunday his first excursion on ice. He fished four hours and caught 75 perches, of which he took the 50 biggest, medium about 500 grams. In monday there were already several fishers on ices, and the catches were excellent. This weekend will be busy on Slemmern, so next report might be long and heavy...

The weather forecast promises plus centigrades beginning in sunday, so seatrout fishing is again possible on western shores. My next week program will be icefishing in the mornings and in afternoons waders on and seatrout hunting!

With Arska once again to ice at 7 a.m. I thought to catch perches, and Arska zanders. Zanders did not show a fin all day long, and even perches played difficult to be caught. We driiled at least hundred of holes and walked a lot of kilometers. Fishes in sizes to be taken with we had about twenty and some tens of smallies, which we released. Anyway, we could eat smoked perches, and a bit tan on our after winter pale faces.

Askainen 27.2
SFM-toimitus,
Aleksandr and 5 men from St.Peterburg

We were late on the ice at 11 a.m. Immediately there was a slight hit on and we caught some even legal size fishes. In the afternoon happened almost nothing, only some nibbling fishes. At half past five p.m. the hit began again. We went on fishing to seven o'clock. The saldo was about twenty zanders in legal size, the biggest 800 g, at least the same amount we had to release small fishes. The best lures were blue balance jigs and vertical classic Nautilus baited with fish eyes. In the evening there was delicious russian fishsoup Uha bubbling in the kettle.

Pernio, Lohenrengas 26.2.

Today it was surpringly quiet in Lohenrenga. We started at noon and after that we fished about SEVEN hours of nothing. Not a fin ...exept one group of fishers caught three fishes. We were just about to leave, when Juha got me overtalken to kivijärvi to check up the evening hit. First it was empty, then slight hits, but nothing up. Just when darkness fell fishes activated in really shallow 10 cm water in front of the spring. Juha tries first, but got nothing. After a while I went to try and got a hit and fish on the ice. That was a lucky fish!. No more happenings exept a one meter long wooden stick, which I tried to tire up a while. Finally I got it released, we do not eat that slim stuff anyway...

Ice fishing with my friend from  14.30 to 17.30. Air pressure was really high in 1035 mBar. That was not enough, we did not have a slightest hit. Even the echoload showed almost empty, only one fishecho. I fished in shallow under 2 m water. There were many other fishers too, mostly bait paste fishers, and even they had no fishes. i wonder where fishes are. It has been quite a long time from last time they put rainbows into the lake. Perhaps we should have fished later in the evening like Tapani in Lohenrengas even till half past six o'clock.

Pielinen 24.2.
HarriM

In Northern Karelia burbots are spawning now. In thursday evening I made a short trip on ice and caught seven fishes. All took on Topi hara-spoon without bait. Many co-fishers caught nice catches, too. Fishes were all males, no mamma burbots were seen. Hit were eager and heavy. Now I have to prepare for The competition Icefishing of Million Euros in this weekend in Tuuri.

Pernio, Lohenrengas 24.2.
SFM-toimitus, Michel, Daniel, Juha, Jarmo and Reijo

We were on the ice at two o'clock p.m. Pompiainen gave from the first hole a nice 1,5 kg brown trout with second movement of the lure. Later from the same hole came a small rainbow. We fished next on Kivijarvi till half past six. Fishes activated after sunset. Reijo caught anice trout and Daniel a fine rainbow and  SFM-toimitus a rainbow about two kilos. A lot we had careful bites an even one fish broke Reijo's line. White phosphor headed Leech was hot lure today.

Mietoinen 23.2.
SFM-toimitus, Michel, Daniel, Timo and Kari

We were on the ice at six p.m.. At eight  SFM-toimitus and Michel were too tired to go on and left home. Others tried till half past nine with no results. Spawning of burbots is eveidently over now?

Finally the minus degrees have worked for us perch fishermen and created thicker ices. We  were first fishers on a old hot spot. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. we caught perches in class +200g about eight kilos with balance jigs, the biggest  ones were a bit under 400 g. A nice catch, when you think that Daniel had his second perch icefishing day in his carrieer.

Sarkisalo 22.2

and Kalle

The first and probably the last burbot fishing day in this winter to Sarkisalo waters. Minus 13 centigrades and freezing wind. We caught five small about half a kilo male fishes. The milt was running.

Naantali and Askainen 22.2.
SFM-toimitus, Michel and Daniel

We thought to make an effective strike on ices, but the fishing is for some reason very difficult now. We began fishing at half past nine in the morning. Almost the first hole gave a nice 39 cm zander, Then it was more quiet. Till half past noon we caught only ten perches, and they were quite small. In the evening we tried to catch burbots again. From 5.30. to 8.00 p.m. we did not have a slightest hit. The weather was arctic: temperature minus ten centigrades and wind blowing from northeast.

We tried to tickle burbots some hours in the evening. Till eight o'clock p.m. we did not have a hit. Same promlem had all the other fishers, too.

We drilled plenty of holes in front of rushes. Eager fishing with balance jigs gave all day long on ly one hit on orange-tiger 12 cm Nils master. Perhaps the nasty weather hold the mouths of pikes shut?

Pernio, Lohenrengas 20.2.

I made one trip again. I have never earlier caught a rainbow trout with icefishing, but now I finally succeeded. After about 10 minutes fishing I had first one on! It was the biggest of the trip, 53cm/1,42kg. Immediately I caught second fish  50cm, then the situation calmed down. Hits and moving lines I had during the day. Total saldo was 4 rainbows on the ice, three lost fishes and several hits. Twice a fish broke my line...

I caught three of the fishes from Kivijärvi. The hot spot was a bit northeast from the rock on shore near the place, where fresh water runs to the lake from a spring. In Pompiainen the best place was the mouth of the small creek. There were 4 other fishermen, too. When I left home, the total catch was 10 fishes. Once again a nice trip to Lohenrengas!

Vanajavesi, Kaarteenlahti 14.-15.2.
PeteA
, Tawny and Maya

In monday we icefishes four hours in the afternoon. Small perches hit nicely on my balance jig and Tawny's mormuska. The total catch was a bit over one kilo of fishes. I made files of all of them and we fried them in the evening. In tuesday we were on the ice all day long. We tried to catch pike, too, but without results. Again we had a lot of small perches. In the afternoon roaches began hit like crazy on the colored hook under 3 cm Nils Masters balance jig. Anyway our catch was not really mighty.

Tawny fishing intensively. Fishing with mormuskas demands sensitiveness even if the weather is artic.

Mynalahti 12.2.
JussiT

First time in this year to icefish zanders. I and two friends were on the ice from dusk to dusk. The hit was poor, but anyway we caught fishes enough to taste in the evening. The ice was almost everywhere about 15 cm and like a mirror. It was good to have slidepreventers on your boots.

T
he Very Unofficial World Championships of Icefishing Burbots were held in saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. The competition was so called invitaton cup, onley those, who were invited could paraticipate. The arrangements were made by Roukalahden Raittiit (The Temperates Club of Roukalahti nonofficial organisation). The idea of the competition was to catch so many burbots as possible, without forgetting huge amount of doping. Most of teh partcipants took good care of that last point. The song sang in sauna sounded high and loud. Finally all the burbots saved their lives, no fishes were caught. Many of the competitors had in the morning reddish eyeballs, the reason was probably the smoke from open fires. Some of them complained slight headache, too. They had to select the winner by lottery, even then I was not lucky enough. This is the end of my report from WC, hik!

Parainen 13.2.
SFM-toimitus
, Timo and Jani

The southern parts of Airisto are still totally open. We spent three hours in the afternoon flyfishing and photographing. Eastern storm was quite arctic, you could fish only on the lee sides. In calm mirrors we saw some tailing trouts. Jani and SFM-toimitus had a couple of careful hits. One following fish made a huge whirl behind the fly!

Aland, Hammarudda 5.-8.2
Pingo

Seatrouts were in the weekend  in really good hitting mood. One fisherman casted a mighty catch: 4,1,  3,4,  3,1 and  1,9 kilos trouts in one day. Tolle has had time to fish in this year, his catch in the year 2005 is already 39 seatrouts, that is a huge number. In tuesday Tolle caught again  1,7 and 1,4 kg trouts. It is nice to find that the seatroutfishing is back on the level it used to be three four years ago. And nicest is, that the medium size of fishes is now even bigger than earlier!

Again icefishing burbots from 5.30 to 8 p.m. I took home four male fishes and released one just about fish. I lost three fishes, when I tired to combine two unmatching things to do - to talk in mobile and fishing. Milt was running!

JussiT was fishing there with his father, too. Jussi got two male burbots and some he lost on the way to the hole. Jussi's father handled a while one a bit bigger fish, but it decided, that it is more fun to spawn as to be a soup.

Lohenrengas, Pernio 7.2.
SFM-toimitus
, Tarmo, Juha and Reijo

We were on the ice a bit before noon. The hit was very careful, mostly slight pushes.Tarppi lost a nice fish on Pompiainen and a mighty fish on Kivijarvi. Perhaps his one years break in icefishing had lost his touch. We caught seven rainbows. The best lures were small mormuskas. In the dusk time Reijo caught two fishes with a phosphor head small leech.

Kaarina 5.2.

On the ice at half past six p.m. The first half an hour gave a lost small burbot, one to the ice and back, one about kilos fish to take home and mamafish with caviar. I fished till nine p.m., but that half an hour gave all the happenings - I should have come earlier!

It was a surprise, when I began cleaning fishes at home. Both milt and roes were already running. I had to to hurry, but Isucceeded to have about 400 g caviar to be freezed. Perhaps these odd weathersin  this winter have mixed up the spawning time of burbots. Normally now the season should begin.

The ice is still very weak, a bit out of the shoreline you need only a couple of winds of drill . There was only one other fisherman on the ice beside me, he caught four male burbots. I did not weight the mamamfish, but my estimation is between one and half and two kilos.

Parainen 28.-31.1.
Niko
, Moykky, Jaakko and Passoja

We icefishes our old familiar pike hot spots from friday to monday in Parainen. All together we caught
19 pikes, of which with jigs 17 fishes and with baitfishes two. The biggest were 4170, 3840, 3740g, and three others over 3 kg, mostly the pike were nice size icefishing fishes. In saturday we caught only two fishes ( possible reason was hangover, which we got with in friday evening.)  Jaako's bigger pike with baitfish was 2,94 kg. It hit on white bream. The best hit was in sunday, when we made 12 pikes to turn on the ice. The ices are really weak, only 4-10 cm on our hot spots. We took only two pikes up, all the others are still hunting small fishes under the ice. The other of the ones we opened (2,6 kg) had had  bleak orgies, and still took as desert a silvery Kaimaani balance jig. The best lure was once again Kaimaani in colors silver sides, red head and yellow tiger. In sunday when it was snowing we had at noon a really hot 10 minutes fishing. One hole gave pikes 2,9-2,7-1,8-1,2 kg and the hole next to it a 4,17 kg pike!

In monday I,  Janne, Jaakko+ Passoja were all day sunbading on the ice. The catch was honorable one 150 g perch with black and silver Kaimaani and one about three kilos lost pike in the hole.It has always been a difference between high and low aitpressures. The nastier the weather is the better the hit is in eaarly and midwintertime.

Kaarina 3.2.
TimoK
and Jussi

Spying two hours in the evening, if burbots are on the swim. Jussi lifted to the ice one 1,5 kg fish. We both lost some baitfishes, when  burbots robbed them. Timolle lost one smallies on the under edge of the hole. There is not very thick ices, when drilling with six inhes drill you not even got short of breath!

Northern Karelia, Pyhaselka 2.2.
HarriM

The evenings, which I have icefished burbots have mostly been difficult in Pyhaselka area. The water level has been so hight, that the old spawning places have changes a lot and it has been a problem to find fishes. I made three total No Fish trips, but now in wednesday I finally succeeded, when it was possible to drive on the ice with snow scooter. The hit was quite poor, but I caught three nice burbots to make soup of. Fishes were 900 gr, 1,5 and 1,6 kg and took on jigs baited with fishbaits. There is no sign of spawning yet, the bellies of fishes were still hard. Some adventure I had when the motor of the scooter broke in the middle of the vast lake. I am waiting eagerly for the hottest hit time of burbots.

A Lake in Pernio 2.1.
Johannes

Four hours of icefishing gave about twenty perches. Two of them were really mighty fishes:1,63 and 1,84 kg.
The seatroutfishing is now quiet, they have not developped yet sideplanners to fish over the ice, which covers the shoreline waters. Fishing is now impossible without boat, and even then perhaps you need help from an icebreaker.

Hammarudda, Aland 1.2.
Pingo

The wind blew from northwest, air temperature was + 1 centigrades and the waterlevel 30 cm over normal. The nort side of Gottbyreven was now a perfect fishing place.Tolle spinnfished and landed two seatrout and lost two more. All the happenings with his selfmade spoon Haxa. The quality of fishing gets better immediately, when air temperature rises over freezing point!
