To the ice at half past seven a.m. The surface was ok to
walk on , because of nighttime minus degrees. 13
happenings, of which 9 visited on the ice. The biggest
three pikes were over two kilos, others 1-2 kg. The
hottest hitting time lasted till ten o'clock. The best
lure was kaimaani balance jig in colors tiger and
smelt. Home at 11 a.m.

In the beginning the surface of the ice was ok to walk on,
but after noon it had softened so, that you sank to the
ankles. Petrus took up and released a nice 2,56 kg
pike, let a kilo class fish to release itself under the
hole and had a heavy hit, which even bend the stiff
rod. All the happenings on Nils Masres 12 cm balance jig
in color orange-tiger. All the other lures had possibility
to swim in peace, only the rushes were hanging on them
every now and then.

Trying to fish whitefishes near by the ferry harbour. We
casted the bait into the water at eight a.m. The first
hour went, when trying to hold the lines away from
drifting icefloats. When sun was really shining the floats
smelt away., but still we had no observations of
whitefishes. At three p.m. we went back home to Salo. The
bags were then lighter than in the morning. Total NF day,
not a slightest bite!

We were out fishing with Robert and to make
video of seatrout fishing, when I succeeded again! This
time I casted my lines exacly on a big trouts back. It was
not very pleased on this kind of action, it splashed with
its tail and hurried away. Just after this "specially
skillful" cast Tolle called and told us to come
to Hammarudda, where in a place there were plenty of
trouts. When we arrived, Tolle had caught four fishes and
lost five. The biggest was 3,9 kg and the others
were 2,4, 1,7 and 1,7 kg, All silvery shiny and in very
good condition. He had lost a about five kilos fish, which
had hit on the hanger fly in front of the lure. He lost
the fish almost in the net. It is anteresting, that this
fish chose the small fly not the big lure. Many seatrouts
like small, tiny flies better than larger spoons or
wobblers. We phographed Tolle's fishes and then we went on
fishing. At my second cast there were 10 - 12 small trouts
swimming round my line, but they were not willing to take
my fly. Then I saw a big nice trout to swim over my line,
splashed with its tail and swam away. Finally it was too
dark to fish on.

Fishing whitefishes with two "crazy" guys from
Tampere from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. A beautiful day! No
happenings. We saw one fish caught. All others seem to
have own rules in fishing. We were the only ones to fish
legally with one rod, others had at least three per man.
One hero had his third rod about 100 meters from other two.
A swan swam on the lines of this unguarded rod. Now the
bird has on its legs lead weight and hooks. I think I wait
for open waters and go by boat to more peaceful places. I
hope it is possible on easter time!

Nobody saw or caught whitefishes! At early evening hours I

afternoon hours. I was on ice at 6 p.m., thinking, if the
whitefishes come to shallow waters in the evening. The
result was totally better, I even caught a fish! A fellow
fisher had just before I came had three fishes, the only
ones he had seen all day long. In the daytime there had
been many fishers, but nobody succeeded to catch any
whitefishes.

The seatrout fishing gets better and better every day! In
many places the water temperature is already in 3
centigrades. I had once again to handle two nice fishes in
saturday! The season goes on like earlier. I lost both of
them just, when I tried to get them in my net. Ola
Sundberg caught in sunday a nice 62 cm trout. The
fishing is now on its best, said Ola. One group fished
from boat and had one about one kilos fish. They saw a
school of trouts to follow their lures just to their boat.
Fishes were not willing to take any kind of lures.
Estimation was, that most of the fishes were in about two
kilos class. In saturday two fishers had three seatrouts
in Eckero waters. It seems, that this year the medium
weight of trouts is a bit bigger than last year. Most of
the caught and lost fishes have been in this two kilos
class. The weather forecast promises warm weather and
southern or southwestern winds to this week. That is
perfect troutfishing weather...!

At eleven a.m. we were buying the yearly licences to Karkkila's
rivers. The licence costs only 40 euros. Next project was
to eat pizzas in Masuuni, our tradition, and to plan
the fishing of the day. We decided to start in Saavariver,
to check up, what is the situation in upper parts. There
was no need to wet our flies, even on fast running parts
of the river there was icecover on. Next we took the loose
lines away in the centre of Karkkila. Practising our
casting skills was all we got, we did not see a fin. In
Pitkalarapids there are a couple of nice deeper holes, so
we thought there might live some nice fishes, even if the
water is cold. The only happening was a twenty cm trout,
which took Tapsa's fly. We ended the fishing day trying
once more in the centre, and NF situation was still on. If
the water level will be ok, we try again two weeks later.

We changed our plan from Reinikkarapids to
Hannularapids. The weather forcast was right with sunshine,
but the wind was from north and really chilly, so our
hopes of quality springtime flyfishing were ruined. Iiro
lost a nice fish, which hit on the fly in a deep hole
between rapid stones. Kari broke the leader knot,
when a fish hit. That was a bad mark on a experiended
tournament fisherman's records! Otherwise we spent the day
by open fire grilling sausages, cooking coffee and talking
about fishing. We met there Ville Vainio, too. His
comment: " Incredible to meet guys from Pori here and
at this time of the year!". For one broken leader we
drove over 700 km, but this is stonefly fishing!

First time this spring trying , if the stonefly hatches
have activated trouts. The weather forecast did not
promise much. The morning was cold and cloudy, but at
about two p.m. the sun began shining. Then we saw the
first tailing trouts on the upper parts of the river. The
fishes were so clever, that they tailed just on the border
of the licence area. Wind made casting difficult, but it
was just and just possible to reach the fished in these
windy conditions. I tested many flies and finally a nice
fish hit on Potemkin dry fly. My correct strike was
apparently lost in wintertime. The lines flew back on my
eyes and the leader was broken. We had no more contacts
with nice size of fishes. Lucky, the forecast
promises warmer weather tomorrow...

KIn this competition only salmonids were accepted. I lost
the first price, a trip to Brasil, with 300 g. The winner
had 5 fishes weighting 8390 g. I caught only 8030 g, so I
was second, that is a lost place. Anyway I got a nice
Olympus digital camera. The beginning was excellent. With
Kuusamo Latka spoon in color yellow-orange I caught
rapidly four rainbows. One fish I caught with Mutu Leech.
Just at the end of the competition time I hooked with a
small mormuska a about 1,5 kilos fish, Which I lost in the
tube of the hole, it apparently swam toward Brasil. So I
have to enjoy digital photos.

In sunday we went icefishing
pikes on a old hot spot.
At two p.m. the weather looked quite nice, but when we got
on ice the rain began and went on all afternoon long.
There was water on the ice about ten cm and the ice was
soft, so drilling was easy in 35 cm ice. We made first
about 50 holes in front of rushes. Moykky started with
tiger color kaimaani balance jig and I with smelt color.
In the first hole Moykky caught a one kilos pike, which
got back to its own element. So the beginning was
promising in spite of the rain. First round did not give
any more contacts before the last hole. Moykky shouted:
"NOW I HAVE A BIG ONE ON!" He had promlems to
keep the fish out of rushes. There was only one meter line
out , and the pike had a real show on. 80lb TUF line
and 45 kg
Predator leader hold the fish nicely, and soon the fish
was to be hooked. I cleaned the hole, hit the lifting hook
under the jaws of the fish and lifted about one meter fish
on the ice. Moykky made some moderate (?) winning shouts.
The fish weighted 6,3 kilos, the biggest this winter and Moykky's
icefishing racord. earlier the record of the winter has
been Janne Turunen's exact six kilos pike caught at the
end of december with kaimaani. The saldo of the rest of
the day was 3 small pikes and two lost fishes, of which
the other one felt like
3-4 kg. Result was quite ok for three hours of fishing. We
had to stop before evening hit hours, when the rain
already ran through our overalls.

Seeking whitefishes all the wet snowing day, from 8
a.m. to 6 p.m. in the area of Huvitus. Thr result
was about billion ruffs, some small perches and three
whitefishes, and a lost whitefish from my hand in the hole.
The whitefishes were in normal Pyhajarvi standard size,
three fishes together about one kilo. I heard, that mainly
the catches have been one or two fishes or NF. The
exeption was the pro class fisherman, who fished near me
and caught nine fishes in one hour.
The ice was nasty to move on, partly the surface was ok
and hard, but in some places the boot went in about six
inches. If you drilled in wrong place, the water on ice
made a big whirl in the hole, and you could not see small
lures like mormuskas, not to talk about seeing whitefishes
under the ice. Many were still driving with cars on the
ice, but had problems, too. The clutches of some vehichels
sang hoosianna. Four wheel drives cars moved still ok. If

Miss iida's handstyle was quite heavy and the explanations
why we caught nothing were in pro level (perhaps in genes).
The BIG fishes were lost always just under the ice.
My choose of lures were totally wrong. Iida: "Balance
jigs are too small. Fishes can not see them and go on
sleeping. Mormyska looks like a pastille".

My heart beated quite rapidly, when I waded in snow two
kilometers from the road to Gullkrona. In the morning the
temperature was a couple of centigrades in minus. I was on
the fishing ices at about ten am. Perches were really in
the mood all day long. I drilled hardly five empty
holes today. I caught hundreds of perches - all were very
small. Perhaps ten fishes were in size to fill my frying
pan in the middle. So I had to release most of the fishes
to their own element. I fished only with 9-10 cm balance
jigs. Their was no importance of the color or the model of
the jigs, smallies loved them all. Perches were mostly
in 4-8 meters water. At sunset time I even tried
shallow waters in front of rushes, but the same result:
small perches there, too.
The ice situation is quite good out on the Gullkrona. Some
halfisland noses and passages showed with bare ice without
snow, that they are dangerous to move on. Almost
everywhere else the ice was 15-25 cm. Out on the open area
there was only 5 cm snow on the ice. I am not sure, but I
think I saw other fishers on eastern side of Hogland
island. Otherwise I could fish totally alone.
