Vanhakyla licence area serves nice fishing with 17 euros. Our biggest trout was  Olli's only 38 cm, but a lot of graylings kept feelings high. In midsummer weekend there probably had been a lot of fishers and disturbance in the river, so carefully you had to fish, if you wanted bigger fishes. Olli caught about 15 legal size fishes, the biggest was 38 cm. Almost all the graylings were in eating size. We found a "new" bridge in upper parts of the area. Now it is easier to reach the pool of  "big" graylings. This time we saw no tailing fishes there, so we fished in more familiar places. The fishers we met told , that in June ther has been nicely searun seatrouts in the river. A fisherman from Vaasa had caught a  4.7-kilos silvery trout with only 0,17 mm leader. The fish had forced him to run after about half an hour. That has been a really fine fish!

Lappfjardriver

We decide to fish rest of the time in lower parts of the river. We buoght licences in the grocery of Dagsmark with  10 euros The area is about 20 km long. First we drove around to find bridges and rapid places, so there was not so much fishing time left. In lower parts the water stood almost quiet with no run so we did not fish there. In Ohriluoma there was a long rapid area, in which we concentrated the fishing. Olli fished once again very carefully and found graylings, the biggest 37 cm. local trouts were abit bigger than in  Vanhakyla. Olli's biggest was a beuautiful  41 cm trout, which is still swimming in the river. Sometimes you have now how your catch tastes, so I took a nice  43 cm trout to our kitchen.

Pernaja, Kaldo 29.6.

KOut for flyfishing at ten p.m. I fished the northern and southern sides of island Kaldo. The result was one one kilo pike and a perch with streamers. Baitfishing gave only one about 300 g roach. The pike took 12 cm long, black-orange Tom`s Pike Fly and the perch took SFM-toimitus's five cm long red-white-gold streamer.

I fished along our cottages shores after seven a.m. and caught two pikes about one kilo.

We woke up to a rainy day. With two boats we rowed about hundred meters from the home harbour. Sari-Anne caught in five minutes with  Biltema spinner three pikes (800g-1100g) from the hottest rushes of this summer. I caught with Storm shad jig a perch. Hanna caught a half a kilos pike immedistely, when she changed the spoon to Biltema spinner. The other boat baded in sunshine. Probably the small (0,5 kg) pike they had, had jumped itself to their boat. In the weekend I caught perches every now and then with worm baits and flies.

Testing my new flyline in pouring rain. Two minor (36 and 38 cm) brown trouts hit on a red Zonker fly.

Fishing all night long gave four rainbow trouts, two with a small, yellow pupa fly, one with Klinhamer and one with Super Tinsel. Tawny caught two small brown trouts with a yellow streamer.

We fished a bit over 24 hours, which gave a good valuation of the level of local fishing. Last timehey had put rainbows in the river was almost four weeks ago for the FFC qualification competition.  Olli fished the Pitkala rapids really carefully, the result two rainbows. I caught there a small fish  (31 cm), which I released. A better one I lost, when the rainbow jumped. Probably they have concentrated to plant small graylings at this time of the summer, so many smallies there were in some places. Graylings saved our trip. Olli caught two 39 cm, Tapio and  Janne had many in size  34-37 cm. Some about 35 cm brown trouts gave some action, too. The outdoor shelter of Pitkalarapids was populated by local younsters, but the shelter downstreams was peaceful and locates in a beautiful place.

I wished to catch perches, when I was studying all day long the northern shores of Gullkrona. The area was quite new to me, so I wondered, where perches locate at this time of the summer. I fished. bays, sunken islands, rushes and streaming passages and everything between them.

The sunken islands south of the Paraisten Portti were a total disapointment. The bottom was full of algae, so it was almost impossible to jigfish there. A bit more north on the claybottoms the situation was better, but I found only some individual perches no schools of them. Some about two hundred grams fishes I got in streams and in front of rushes, mostly the small one kilo pikes were interested in my jigs.

In two places I found a bit better size perches, but not those really good ones. So my storagebox about empty, when I got home. The best lure was  Berkley's brown caterpilar worm with biotic salt as spices. Motor oil, neon green and all normal hot jigs gave only hits!

Espoo, Matinkyla 16.6.
Juha L

I fished very actively pike and zander places from 8 to 11 p.m. in the places, where the depth was between half and three meters, but found no fishes.  LaxMan spinner and  10cm Storm shadjig had some contacts, but that was all. The wind was nastily from north and it rained heavily and horisontally, so I was totally wet, when went home. So this time it was total NF!

Ithought to make a zander fishing trip, but zanders were not pleased with the cold weather. Some minors visited my boat, which I got bored quickly and changed the project to pike fishing. They were very willing to hit on my lures like they use to be in this kind of rainy and windy weather.

I loosed about twenty old stinkers, when finally on a white jig hit a fish in size to be eaten. The correct size will stay as a mystery, because at home our kitchen weight shows only five kilos. Ok the files weighted 4800 g.

A relative call to me from Eastern Finland, Sulkava, while I was fishing. He told, that he is participating in an angling with worms fishing competition arraged in a small local river. He told, that he got frustrated in angling small bleaks, when his neighbor took in his net a zander 6050g! I have say, that there was a real fish to be angled with line and rod!

The files of the mighty pike weighted  4,8 kg, so the pike has been about 8 kilos, because the waste procent in fileting pikes is about 40. Photo SFM-toimitus

MikkoO/Vaparetket and the Icehockey Team Tappara

The Team Tappara of Finnish Icehockey Legue had a relaxing summer day in  Ellivuori. Vaparetket and Kalatiira companies arranged to their favourite team a fishing contest on the Lake Rautavesi. Some of the players caught fishes with rod and reel equipments first time in their life. Total catch was 11 kg pikes, perches and ids. The group took the competititon with humor, the fishes even got bigger in the heat of the smoke sauna. And the big ones, they were once again lost just beside the boats...

I got my seatrout record two cm bigger to 69 cm with a nice silvery female fish! The fish was so beautiful, that I had to release it. The fly was a number ten dark larva and the tippet was only 0,14 mm, so I was a bit lucky, too. Rainbows were in the hitting mood, too!

The Lake Rautavesi, the 2. Asp Fishing Meeting10.6.

On the lake at six p.m. with Mikko and Kallen. We fished the hot spots first about two hours and then had a coffee and meal break. There were several other boats fishing in this meeting, too, guided by local fishing guides from Pirkanmaa area. Veli and Jani were puritanists and only flyfished. Jani had a mighty size of asp on his fly, but lost it. A second fish followed the fly, but did not take it. Veli broke the leader white fighting with a big pike. Our boat had only four pikes, SFM-toimitus three and Kalle one. Our guide Mikko had NF, like the guide should. We fished mostly with grub jigs and wobblers. I had some nice and heavy two times on, perhaps zanders or even asps? The other boats caught pikes, perches, zanders and even a bream. The water is still evidently a bit too cold for asps (+13), some warm days are needed and then it happens. I, Jani and Veli quited fishing before midnight, Mikko and others went on fishing. I eagerly wait the traditional third Asp Meeting, so intereresting and fun the fishing was, and really  this was a well organized happening.

From midnight on:: Kimmo caught an asp, and their boat lost three more. The catching lure was a yellow-white wobbler, which Kimmo had tuned himself. We others caught small pikes and three zanders. In early hours there was a short moment, when asps were hunting smalll fishes and splashed all over. We succeeded not to parcipate in this party...

A Lake in Southern Finland  9.6.
HannuR
and Janne

Spendind an evening fishing tenches with a specialist Janne. Everything was totally new to me. First Janne made the baitmixture of flours, corn and other ingredients. The small bait boilies used as baits and attractors he had made ready already at home. Then he baked atractors in size of grapefruit, and those were casted all around in the water. To the same area he shot with a sling those same small boilies used as baits.

In the main lines he put boilie baits on side leaders. The whole system was casted with  bottom leads.  The reels were Baitrunner models. There were no need to watch the rods all the time because of the electronic alarmers.

First we had quiet times. Then janne made a new attractor place, where he in some moments angled many roaches and a nice 1,5 kg tench. The main rods stood quiet all the time. janne thought, that perhaps he has forgotten some important ingredient away from the boilies. Ok, half an hour later I took the other rod and the fight was on. I was surprised how strong fighters tenches are! Janne,s rods are heavy, because he uses them a lot in carp fishing, still the rod bowed nicely. After awhile Janne had the fish in the net, the first tench of my life! It was exactly two kilos bigger than my earlier tench record!

In rest of the evening we did not catch any more tenches, even they were moving around the area, but we caught some roaches and rudds.

Me and three students of our institute were enjoying weekend  by Kukonkoski rapid area staying in the outdoor shelter. Mosquitos kept us awake almost all night long, nobody had mosquito oil with him, so everyone was fishing very early in the morning. When the sunshine hit on a hot spot I lost three rainbow trouts in the row and caught one fish for the lunch. Otherwise the fishing was quite difficult. The good start, six in the nets visited fishes, turned in sunday as NF. Lucky, until sunday even the first timers had had the touch on rainbow trout fishing. White Marabou Muddler was one of the best flies.

We caught some graylings here
and there, but legal size fishes were difficult to catch. The biggest one, 37 cm,  was caught by Janne Huhtanen, one over 40 cm fish was lost when netting.

Merikarviariver,
the Qualification Contest of Finnish Flyfishing Championships 5.-6.6.

OlliT

The contest was finely organized. The competition was even, if you caught fishes in every sector, that still not secured you get in the finals. The water level is now good for fishing, and so quite a lot fishes were caught in the competition. The weather was ok, specially for us watching and following the contest. Local fishers took the top places, only the second, Kari Suhonen, succeeded to have position between locals. The three best will be in the finals, the fourth has to wait, if he gets a place there. It was a pity, that three of the pre-registered competitors did not come to the contest. There were many willing fishers, who wanted to participate, if  those three had canceled their participation early enough. Greeting to the new finalists!

Sakyla, the Lake Pyhajarvi 3.6.
TimoK
and Markku

Our project was the early summer dryfly whitefishes. We put our boat to the waters in late afternoon in the Fishing harbour of Sakyla. Western winds had rosen high waves, so we drove slowly to the island  Iissalo and the open fireplace there.

We hoped the wind calm down in the evening, but that did not happen, luckily on the eastern shores of the island there was almost calm. All evening long a school of fishes cruised along the shoreline, which I believe were whitefishes. They tailed just like whitefishes: You could see their sharp triangle backfins. Something they were eating just under the surface film, but what? In the air there were flying different species of mayflies and caddisflies, but which of them were hatching?

Markku had possibility to serve to the school a small black Klinkhamer fly and purposely sunken Superpupa almost at the distance of touching the fishes (= rod length). Nothing happened! I could even not to reach the school cruising around all the time.

It would be interesting to hear, if someone else has been flyfishing whitefishes in the Lake Pyhajarvi!

Once again fishing zanders. We were at the places at half past five p.m. and fished to ten. Now the best color was classic zander color chartreusse with silver flakes. The hit was not so hot as last time. Still there were many unspawned females, which all were released exept one. We caught fishes in size totake about 15 pcs, the biggest 45 cm. Now there are too many smallies, most of the caught fishes we had to release.

It was really fun to go flyfishing for a long time. I have fished in the sea almost daily since last month, and that you could even call a overdose. We started in the upermost rapid at nine pm. Insects were hatching and we saw many tailing and rising fishes. Bleaks run away from bigger predators as flashing schools. Two hours of fishing gave only some careful contacts.

As the darkest night fell we had coffee and mealbreak by the open fireplace near the powerplant. Then we tried to fool the brown trouts, which run to the river from the lake Paijanne. Pete caught a 30 cm trout youngster. I lost a nice fish after fighting with it some seconds. An other trout, about 1,5 kg, came to the distance of netting, but I lost it anyway.

A bit before the sunrise we went to an nice island upstreams of the dam. You can nowadays go there over a walking bridge. When the light increased, the rainbows began a jumping show in the stillwater area. The funniest fishes made over one meters airflights. Pete caught immediately a rainbow with a bleakstreamer, and after a while a second fish. We woke up Tawny from the car and told, that now is the time to practice tiring fishes with flyfishrod. First she tried with bleakstreamer, but had no successe. The sun made the world look red-orange colored, so she changed a minitubefly in ambulance color on the line. Just a while and a rainbow was dancing on her line. She tired the fish correctly and got it in the net despite of the good advices, which Pete and I gave to her from the shore. Tiring next rainbow was like from the schoolbook of flyfishing!

My trip included only contacts. I lost those two trouts and in the morning four nice rainbows. The funniest was a fish, which followed my fly about ten feet nipping it all the time. I was lucky to "save" my fly from its teeth! Lucky, Pete took his third fish on my licence. Anyway I took a lot of fishes back to Turku, I got on film many action fishphotos. Evidently my fishing wrist is now too acclimated in jigfishing and works poorly in flyfishing. We quited fishing at eight a.m.

The fight is almost over and Tawny releases her net.

Action like from the schoolbook of flyfishing!

Fishing from the shore in a stream under a bridge. Our catch of the evening was only one legal size zander but a lot of smallies. I had on line a small 30 cm zander, when a big monster hit on it. Unluckily the huge zandermama let its teeth loose of the smallie just on the shoreline.

Fishing again for a looong time. I tied to find new zander places or to be exact new for me. Most of the places are for certain familiar to some fishers. Hardly there are any unknown places...

I fished seriously in four different places, and thre were fishes in every of them, quite nicely in two of these. Problem was once again the size of the fishes. I made about fifty zanders to visit my boat, but only four were in size + 40 cm to take with.

F..king pikes ate up a handful of my jigs, anyway one three kilos mr longnose had come with me, too. Somehow I can not use leaders while fishing zanders. When the wind went down in the evening began ids to tail all over. One brave one even hit a white grubjig, but I lost it.

and Markku

On the hot spot at two thirty p.m. In the first hour both of us made over thirty zanders to visit our boat. In the hitting there were only some short pauses, but until eight thirty we had more casts with fish or hit on than empty casts. The problem is now, that there are too many minors in this area. nly about every fifth is legal over 37 cm size. We took up 26 zanders and about the same amount small legal size fishes we released. The biggest was caught by Markku: only 44 cm. The best colors were fire pumpkin ja old yellow.
