The Salmon Week of Muonio 24.-31.7.
HarriM

I was 6th in grayling competition and 41st in salmon series. This result I got rowing 69 hours in this week. Total catch in the competi 63 salmon.  J. Ojanpera was the winner with a 13,9 kg  salmon. Heat was problematic in fishing and rowing. I had several hits, but no good luck to get them up.

Tanariver and Atserriver in Kola Peninsula june-july
Vyrtsi
and Maria

This summer has mostly served only experiences in fishing. With Maria we spent ten days in Tanariver both sides of the Midsummer time. In five fishing days the saldo was three salmons on, but only one landed. That was a nice two kilos seatrout. So Tana was still quite quiet in salmon fishing.

Week 29 was the long waited high point of the summer. Spending one week fishing salmons in the tributary of Ponoiriver, Atserriver. The trip was a safari, we flew to the upper parts of the river and hiked downstreams. In a week we walked about 60-70 kilometers, but it was nice to hike on the banks of easy walkable salmon river. The week before the weather had been really warm, the daytemperatures were up to 25 centigrades and even more. The water was now 24 centigrades, so it did not promise good for fishing.

No salmon were running into the river, but luckily there were local, earlier into the river run  fishes. The saldo of the week to our six persons group was  44 salmon. I caught seven salmon and two seatrouts. I lost only 3 fishes, which was not much considering, that we used barbless hooks. Now I even think, that why we need barbs at all or treble hooks?

The biggest of my fishes was 88 cm, that is about 7,5 kilos. With one hand rod that was a exellent fight. Mostly the salmon were in 3-6 kilos class, some grilses were caught, too. During this week our group had two big salmons on. I handled a about one meters fish, which made all the jumping and running tricks it could, so I lost it. Now I know the sound of Loop reel when a salmon furiously runs.

In thursday Maria and I will travel to Kuusamo, and in friday we will examine the Finnish Flyfishing Championships waters in Hossa. You will hear from us, when we are there.

Sarkisalo week 30
KariS
and sons

I have written to Fishing Diary about my youngest son Lauri, who is eager fisherman. In wintertime he even slept with his icefishing rod.. Now in summer we sail with our trolling boat. I bought to Lauri a personal Abu kid's rod, and holding his rod he has sat nicely in our boat on trips to Forby waters. Now, one week earlier when he is 2 years 5 months he caught his first fish. He told to me that a pike is on. I tried the line and thought, that some grass is on the lure. After a while I thought to check up the hooks and felt something kicking on Lauri's rod. I gave the rod to him, and the son tired a big, 100 g perch just to the boatside. His older brother helped in netting and now Lauri is a fisherman.

The biggest problem was waiting in the evening. I had cleaned our catch and put them into the refrigerator to get salted for smoking tomorrow. lauri sai, that it is wrong, that he is not allowed to sleep with his fish. Finally he understood the problem and eagerly waited smoked fishes. He selected his own fish and ate it up very passionately. His next wish is to catch a biiig pike. Let us see, what happens, when one of the Forby monsters hit on his lure. I hope he holds the rod firmly!

Uusikaupunki 25.7.
JaniO and Janni

Learning baitfishing in Uusikaupunki waters. We caught small perches and roaches.

The Lake Matildanjarvi 25.7.
JoniS

Harling from four to eight thirty p.m. The water on the surface is already 21 centigrades, that means that my next trip to Matilda will be in the autumn, when waters are cooler. Only some small perhes took my lures even, if I used downrigger. One baitpaste angler had caught a small rainbow, and one boatcrew had rowed all day long and caught only one fish. Last time they have put fishes into the lake was last monday 19.7.

The air pressure has now been too long high about 1012 mBar, and the weather has been too clear. Some rainshowers would activate the fishes.

So now I concentrate on zander fishing!

The Lake Kangasjärvi 21.7.
IiroO
and Tommi

We both had problems to hook the whitefishes, but yet we caught about 15 fishes. Fishing from deep gave the biggest, over 40 cm fishes. When the lake and wind calmed down there was a lot of fishes tailing, but mostly small ones. The big ones were apparently already sleeping?!

Tana and Tornioriver week 29
Harri "The Fish" Matikainen

Week 29 was to me an excellent salmonsession. In Tanariver I and my wife caught two salmon, 6.77 kg and 9.17 kg in two rowing sessions in row. On third turn we even had a good hit, but we lost the fish. Then we came back to Pello, which is our fishing basement in this summer. In friday we started fishing harling in Muonioriver by the village
Pakamukka.  The first rowing gave two salmons, 3.3 and 8.8 kg. Then we could only follow others to fish, because the daily limit is one salmon per fisher per licence day. In the next morning the reel was crying and the rod bowing immedistely in the morning, but that one we lost. In the daytime the river gave to us first a 6 kg salmon, and in the evening a good hit and then something really big on. After tiring the fish about quater an hour I lost it just beside our boat. I estimated, that the salmon was at least 8 kg, so near I could see it.

The water situation in  Tornio-Muoniorivers is lousy, the waters are now so high, that they do not fit in the normal river. Salmon takes lures, when water goes a bit down, that is why you have to be rowing in the right time. Now I begin trainign for the big competition The Salmon Weeks of Muonio.

The Lake Matildanjarvi 19.7.
JoniS

We fished on the lake one three hours licence from 5.30 to 8.30 p.m. The surface water is already +20 centigrades, so our expectations were not high. First we trolled rowing about half an hour, then my friend wanted to go to the boat landing, because there we saw tailing fishes all the time. Perhaps the tankcar had visited that place yesterday. When we got there I saw a tailing rainbow, first cast with Seniori-wobbler and I had fish on! Nice rainbow about one kilo. I lost there three more fishes and my buddy lost 4. They probably had put fishes to lake earlier today, so many we saw.

Then the heaven opened and a rainstorm began. And the fishes shut their mouths. When the rain was over we trolled about half an hour more. Two minutes before our licences were over we had a fish on in deeprigger. The lead was in two meters and the wobbler in about three meters, where the fish hit. The hit was very careful, so the fish was probabbly older inhabitant in the lake, nice 43 cm rainbow. On our surface rod there was only one hit. Now it time to fish in the Lake of Matildanjarvi, if you want to fight with rainbows! The rain cooled the surface water one centigrade. Perhaps one reason, why we had quite a nice catch, was the air pressure, so high as
1017 mBar!

The Lake Kangasjarvi 18.7.
IiroO
and Kalle

Intensive session of flyfishing whitefishes. At the end we checked up the damages, in this case the amount of landed fishes. We took up exactly twenty whitefishes and, of course once again, we lost the big ones. When we found the correct dryfly, we had contacts with fishes almost on every cast!

Karkkila 17.-18.7.
OlliT
and Tapsa

We visited Karkkila rivers to find, how co-operative fishes are in the middle of summer.
In saturday we fished about six hours, the saldo was graylings 35 and 38 cm and three rainbows, of which one was netted. In the evening we were in local music festival, the show was really on there...

In the next day we began fishing at six p.m. We fished the rapid Pikala, where it was quite quiet with fishes. Plenty of small graylings were interested in our flies, and both of us caught a raibow, too. Small flies were good, various larvas and bead head flies specially.

Merikarviariver 17.7.
Jani "NF" Ollikainen

Our flyfishing club, V-SPK, arranged the club championships in Lankoski area. Over twenty members were contesting of the Cup. Five fishers caught fishes. The Champion is our club chairman Ari Meskanen with  2 rainbowtrouts. The water situation is ok now, even if it is the dry July time. In the evening of 16th, a fisherman had caught in Lankoski a nice, 79 cm searun seatrout. If you want to hunt searun fishes, now is the time to visit Merikarviariver.
(In the Championships I was 4th)

Finnish and Norwegian  Lapland 9.-15.7.
KariA
and Kake

We spent 9.-11. days fishing Luttoriver. In the first day we only enjoyed fishing and released all the fishes. An elderly gentleman asked us releasing the fishes and, if we do not like to eat fish. I told to him, that we  have still fishes not eaten from earlier fishing days. In the second day we took up some more foodfishes. Then in the morning I turned the car wheels so that our direction was to Norway.

We toured around the norwegian lapland  11.-12. days and enjoyed those beautiful sceneries. In the evening of 12th after 900 km we were back in  Utsjoki. When the weekly prohibition was over at 7 p.m. we were already ready to fight with grilses in Tsarsriver. The place at falls was once again so full booked, that we walked to the canyon of Kevoriver. We fished to midnight, but no signs of fishes. We camped overnight in the canyon and went on fishing in the morning. The same show was on, no signs of salmons in the morning either. The night between 13.-14. days we fished in the curve of hotel in Utsjoki. Same thing, only a lot of smolts and graylings were interested in our lures.

Then in the 14th we drove to Kapsariver in Inari. In the beginning everything seemed to be ok. At second cast kake caught alegal size grayling. We fished the river about 5 km, but the result was poor, only one forel per fisher. Perhaps the problem was the flood in the river or our fishing skills. In the morning we of 15th we were in Kitkariver in Kuusamo. The fishing places and views there are mighty fine, but we did not catch any legal size fishes even there.

At least we saw big, huge fishes. This monster, SALMON 18,3 kilos, was in the coldroom of Hotel Pohjan Tuli. The fish was caught by the cook, Tommi Lehtonen, in  4.7. from Tanariver flyfishing and wading. His double handed Sage rod has spent heavy times with this fish. The fly was dressed on number 6 double hook, the body of hologram gold and peacock colored icedubbing, the wing was chartreusse, olive and black foxhair. Tommi's earlier record, 15,2 kg,  fishing from shore was from the year 2002.(SFM-toimitus) . Photo SFM-toimitus

Tainionvirta 12.7.
PeteA

Fishing all night long gave as result three lost nice fishes. One of them was a nice size brown trout. The water level was high, which made wading difficult and it was hard to get flies deep enough.

Tenoriver, Sirma 12.7.
HarriM

Harling in Sirma area and an immediate result a salmon 6,77 kilos. nousulohi. LJ-wobbler was the hot lure, model sidetits with brown back and grey belly. The fish hit on our first round and wad clear silvery, just run to the river from the sea.

The Lake of Matilda  11.7.
JaniO
and Janni

Teaching my daughter Janni how to behave in the boat and move on the lake. Everything went ok, but pity, that we caught only one small perch. Grilling sausages and rowing on the lake was fun. They had put into the lake some rainbow trouts last monday, but in three hours between 1.30 and 4.30 p.m. we did not see a fin. Next time we are perhaps luckier!

Being in the boat is already ok for Janni and she is learning fishing, too. Photo SFM-toimitus

Sarkisalo, an island by the open sea 11.7.
JoniS

It had been about a month since I had fished last time, that quite a long break for me. We tried to fish perches with jigs from certain earlier good hot spots, but the result was only acouple of lost fishes. It was a bit depressing, that we had to wake up in the morning really early, so early we had to drive back home, too. The water was clear and the temperature on the surface + 17 centigrades. So that was not the problem. Problematic was in jigfishing, that almost every cast took up green algae, which some years ago was not there. The bottom has been very clean.

I lost even more my feelings, when my daddy got some nice fishes with worm baits. Then we both had quiet times, no fishes anywhere.

Norja, Kautokeino 10.-11.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro

Osku lost a nice trout, which hit on a pink foam ant fly. The fish pulled the hook straight! On our trip we could find, that the man is developping with long steps in the art of flyfishing. Iiro specialized in big, over one kilos whitefishes. I had to run  200 meters downstreams after a 38 cm trout. These naturally born fishes are really powerful! We caught some arctic chars and two legal size trouts, too. It rained in every day, so the water level was going slowly up. There were a lot of insect hatches, mosquitos, too... Now we are on the road back home.

Tanariver 10.-11.7.
SFM-toimitus
and Petrus

Our last fishing day of this trip we spent fishing Tanariver on norwegian side. In the mouth of Borsseriver we saw no tailing graylings. Some fishes took nymph and pupa flies. Three times we saw a grilse to jump, but they were not interrested in our flies. A boatfisherman lost a about five kilos salmon. In Ylakongas it was totally quiet.

Rest of the licence time we camped in Levajok. Even there we saw only a few tailing graylings, perhaps the water was still too cold. Some fishes in size to eat we caught, two of them we smoked in smoking bag. We saw only two jumping grilses and  one sandcasting. Salmon were not interested in our flies. In sunday afternoon at five we packed up and 1300 km driving back home was waiting.

The highlight of our trip were dryfly fished arctic chars in Batsfjord highlands. These six were the result of first session, biggest 780 g.

Dragsfjard, Holma 9.7.
JuhaL Ville, Ida and Joonas

PIt was a hard day waiting, because we had to catch perches, so that we can serve fishdinner to our guests. Joonas had already two fishes in thereceptacle. We sailed with our host  Ville more and more to the open sea, and too far of course. Nothing there, In a inner bay we caught two fishes, but then the time was out. In homeharbour we caught four more perches fast, so the supper was secured, even my dog Ida got one.
Warning! Be careful even, if the weather is warm and sunny. I stayed too long without shirt on the dock having only a towel on me. The water in the sea is still cold. Now I have fever and my throat is sore. This was my holiday! Sunny summer to eveeyone!

Vetsikkoriver 8.-9.7.
SFM-toimitus and  Petrus

We fished 24 hours beginning at 8 in the evening. Two heavy contacts with grilses and some fishes showed themselves when turning  behind the fly. The river was so dry that there were only a few pools to be fished. Lucky, Petrus caught a nice, fat 35 cm grayling for us to eat.

Pernaja, Kaldo 8.7
JuhaL

Sleeping tasted so good, that I went fishing after noon. making a worm to swim as bait gave only one perch. I caught aone kilos occasional pike, too, even if it blowed from north. Next to
Dragsfjard.

Norway, Kautokeino 8.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro

We went back to the troutriver. I caught a 50cm fish,  and the boys did not get their big ones landed. Osku had once again a pike, what a machine he is!

Inari, Peldoriver 8.-9.7.
KariA and Kake

We got a lot of graylings and trouts, pity, they were all very small. We go back to the Luttoriver.

Pernaja, Kaldo 7.7.
JuhaL
and Hanna

I had already slept four hours, when my mother woke me up at 7 a.m. and asked me to come fishing with her. We rowed
100-500 m from our cottage. Maamy caught in first hour 3 pikes. I tried to jigfish laying on my back and having the hat on my eyes, that attitude gave no hits. In the daytime I waded in the rushes and caught with a streamer one kilos pike. The swedish wormes seemed to have lost their taste, so I digged in secret place real worms. In the daytime perches were too small, so I worked a while as timberjack. Perhaps I was too late trying to fish in the evening. I caught only four perches, of which three were in size to be eaten.

Norway, the Arctic Sea, the Fjord of Teno 7. 7.

We fished about an hour in a beautiful scenery. The sea was like a mirror and the air almost too warm. Petrus caught some small codfishes and SFM-toimitus saw 3 porpoises.

I arrived to our cottage in the afternoon. In the evening I rowed to a rushes nearby in a deep passage and tried to fish perches with spinners. I caught two about one kilos pikes, but no perches. When I was bading in our sauna, the perches began to tail in front of our dock. Soon I had perches enough to cook delicate soup:

Norway, The Highlands of Batsfjord 6.- 7.
SFM-toimitus and  Petrus

We hiked in the afternoon up to the hills. When we arrived to the lakes, the weather was cold, windy and foggy. We began to fishing in a tiny creek. It ran through a swamp and disappeared partly under the earth. Small, even under squaremeter pools were full of arctis chars. When you dropped the fly the hit came immediately. Petrus caught the biggest one, about 25 cm. We took about 10 fishes and made them in a smoking bag. Delicacy! At midnight the wind calmed and the air warmed up. Suddenly the surface of the lake was broken by tailing chars. We were flyfisher´s heaven! We could serve dryflies blindly or directly to the tailing fishes. At 2 o´clock the hatch was over. We had landed 6 beaytiful fishes, the biggest 800g.
we had a break by open fire, had some coffee an followed the surface life of the lake. Then at 5 the hatch begun again. We caught 3 more nice fishes. During the night we landed 9 arctic chars and had over ten good contacts. We were so tired that we had to hike back to our tent. After an hour and half hiking it was time to go sleeping. I was sleeping before my head did hit the pillow.

Norway, Maziriver 7.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro

It was hard to catch fishes in the canyon,  but in lower parts of the river fishing was excellent. We caught tens of white fishes and graylings. Osku succeeded again, he got his first ever flyfished whitefishes. I lost 2 nice trouts, which hit on small flies. Some really  big fish took all the leader. Now we unbuild our camp and go again troutfishing...

Inari, Luttoriver 6.-7.7.
KariA and Kake

First night in Lutto. Kake has caught so big trouts that I have to shame my smallies. Let see one more night, perhaps I will be lucky and have a big trout on my line.

Inari, Sotariver 5.-6.7.
KariA and Kake

One night and day in Sotariver. When you walk far enough you will catch legal size graylins, too.

Norway, Maziriver 5.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro

Quality grayling fishing. The biggest fishes about 45 cm and they are furious fighters. Osku caught his first ever flyfished fish! Extra catch were some trouts and arctic chars. Most of the fishes we caught with dryflies and larvas. Tomorrow new adventures...

Norway, Ifjord highlands 4.7.
SFM-toimitus and  Petrus

It was really difficult to find licence sellers in Sunday in Norway. Finally we found an open postoffice and got our permits. We made a sightseeing trip to Eckeroy birdmountain. The creek running by our nightcamp gave us tens of small trouts. In the morning we fished rivers on highland, heavy wind made flyfishing impossible on the arctic char lakes. We caught tens of chars and some trouts. Pity, they were all tiny.

Norway, Kautokeino, Cabardasriver 4.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro

Finally we succeeded, life is now nice! I caught 46 cm and 50 cm trouts. Olli had a 50 cm fish, too. Iiro lost about ten trouts but caught a 50 cm whitefish. Osku got the biggest pikes of today.

Sweden, Saxnas 4.7.
JaniO

The second day: heavy rains lifted the water level to flood. Water rose between the 3rd and 4th session 45 cm and at nighttime even more. My result was in 3rd sektor 1 fish and in 4th  NF. Totally I was some 65th. The Finnish teams no 1 was 10th and 2 was 12th. And the best Finn was our team´s Ville Vainio, 6th. Now the price gala is on. This has been a good trip to learn new ideas of competition flyfishing. I am really happy!!!

Utsjoki, Patoniva 4.7.
SFM-toimitus, Petrus, Kari and Kake

SFM-toimitus went to sleep at one o´clock and the trio went on fishing in Patoniva. Only one grilse was seen, no other happenings. Our camp was in sleep at 6 am. Everyone had been awake for 48 hours.

Norway, Kautokeino, Cabardasriver 3.7.
NikolaiH, Olli, Osku and Iiro
The evening was difficult. When we arrived a thunderstorm was on. It was painful to build our camp whwn it rained cats and dogs. The water is high and quite cold, so fishing is a bit poor. Some insect hatches were on but trouts and whitefishes were not rising. Lucky, the weather in Sunday looks much better! I am sure that one of these days will happend a lot.

Utsjoki, Tsars- and Kevoriver 3.7.
SFM-toimitus, Petrus, Kari and Kake

In the evening at 6 o´clock we were fishing in the falls of Tsars. SFM-toimitus had one heavy hit  in the down pool. We saw there several grilses. A local fisherman caught a nice 1.5 kg fish with a spinner. We left the place because there were too many people in a small area. We went walkig 2 km to Kevoriver to a very beautiful pool between two waterfalls. A nice grilse broke Kari´s line. No other happenings. At midnight walking back to a boat and to our camp.

Teno, The Salmon Festival 3.7.
SFM-toimitus

There were 120 boats fishing from 11 am to 5 pm. The result was poor. Only 5 grilses were caught. The winner had a fish 1.4 kg. My friend Antti was the second with 1.2 kg grilse. Congratulations! They even lost the winning fish, a several kilos salmon.

Sweden, Saxnas 3.7.
JaniO

The first day of the Championship: I got one fish in the river and three on the lake. This was a difficult day. Pools were very uneven. The best result in the river was 37 fishes, but f.i. the silvermedalist of last year´s  World Championship got NF. I fished on the lake with english lake-specialist Ian Bar. Result was to him 3 - 4. Not bad. Fin 1 is after the first day 7th, Fin 2 is 13th and I myself 69th.

Utsjoki, Patoniva 3.7.
SFM-toimitus and Petrus

Taking the heat and loose feelings away after 1300 km driving. Fishing from 3 to 6 o´clock at sunny night. Both of us got some small graylings and saw one jumping grisle. The gnats sounds like a rain on our tent canvas.

Sweden, Saxnas 2.7.
JaniO

The trainingday is over. The lake was OK, but I have to find my strike. Of 8 fishes I got only one into the boat. The river gave to me so familiar NF. The water level is high and the temperature low. That makes fishing difficult to all the teams. Only some small trouts, 15-25cm were caught. The real competition begins tomorrow!

Sweden, Saxnas 1.7.
JaniO

I arrived today, but had no time to fish, because I had to be in the captains´ meeting. Some of our team were practising on a lake, results were some arctic chars. The results of other national teams  varieted from almost zero to splended catches. Frenchmen f.i. are so sure about their skills that they do not practise tomorrow at all in the river areas. The competition will be hard and tight. I myself will tomorrow fish in the morning on the lake and in the afternoon in rivers.
