, Juha and Petrus

We had to work hard to find perches so splittered they were. Co-operative fishes were in  2-6 meters in front of rushes, not on underwaterhills or reefs like normally. Seven hours of fishing gave nine kilos perches. Biggest ones: Petrus 440 g, SFM-toimitus 380g  and Juha 340 g. We fished mosty with balance jigs.

We went to tr, if we could have roe delicacyin dinner table this weekend. We caught one over two kilos burbut, but, pity it was a male. A good soup is anyway waiting. The fish took a robber spoon with baitfish and was the only contact all evening long. I caught it near by the spawning area.

Simrishamn, Sweden week 5
JohanA

Fishing is now top quality in Simrishamn. We made the first salmon trolling trips this year with excellent success. In three days we caught 15 salmon and lost about the same amount. Fishing here is now unique, there are a lot of salmon in Simrishamn waters. The fishes are in excellent form and serve nice fights. Normal size is 4-9,5 kilos. We have caught salmon both with Dipsy diver and green Apex and with Locker and Vestlingen on deep rigger. In monday and tuesday Mr. Christian Keskitalo and  Mr. Tomas Petterson caught both nice salmon. My boat is now in the harbour of  Simrishamn ready to start to new trips. Now is the time to reserve a fishing trip in February. Never ha salmon fishing been this good here in Simrishamn!

Testfishing, if the burbots are already in the hitting mood. Ari caught one about one kilos male fish, the milt was still hard, so the spawning time is not yet on. In all evening I had no happenings. I fished with baited crown grapnel and Ari with baited robber spoon.

We did not find the schools of big perches this time either, even if we tried to find them in new places. A lot of smallies, but only 5 kg perches to take with / fisherman.

Eastern Peimari 25.1
OlliT
+ co

We tried to icefish perches in Peimari area. With me on this trip were Ari and two police inspectors. The day began with excitement, when we crawled over a shiproute on two cm ice. First in the morning the perches were very co-operative, but the size was poor 50-100 g. During the day we caught fishes in size to take with, too, but medium size was small all day long, a lot of fishes had to be released. The top session was, when Ari first said: "If I only could catch a legal size seatrout" (40 cm). Ok, about a minute later Ari's Hopeasiipi vertical jig got a ride like on train. He managed to get the fish on ice; a nice, fat 42 cm seatrout!  Others were fishing mostly with vertical jigs, I used balance jigs. Vertical jigs perhaps caught more pcs of fishes than with balance jigs, reason was probably the small size of fishes. Balance jigs gave a bit bigger fishes and good amounts, too. Total catch was about 30 kg perches, one seatrout and one legal size zander.

we had meaning first to fish pike on a familiar hot pikeplace. A local inhabitant came to us and told that parking and fishing is forbidden there. Parking perhapps, but icefishing is everyman's right in Finland. So we drove a couple of kilometers and changed the species to perches. Between 3 an 5 pm we caught about 3-4 kilos perches, of which some were quite nice 400 g fishes. Fishes were in 4-6 meters water. From 5 to 6.30 am we checked, if the burbots are already in hitting moods. One herring bait was taken, perhaps a burbot, but not for sure.

This time the old finnish proverb: "Do not go fishing further than to the sea" was perfectly true. I fished all day long far away from home harbour and moved kilometers on thin ices, but found only some few perches per hole.  I found no real good schools of fishes. When going back to my car, about  100 m from there,  I had to take a brake. The last hole showed that the perches are here. I caught in an hour about 3 kilos of fishes, some of them nice size, too. The total catcth of the day was 6 kg, and only a few big ones.

Trying to find perches. First in the morning we fished pikes. 2 hits and one one kilos fish up with my Kaimaani balance jig. Four men's total catch of the day was  20 perches. Tomas caught in early evening hours  4 zanders with Nils Masters balance jig.  Overall this was a difficult fishing day!

A cold day to icefish zanders. In the morning there was freezing -16 centigrades, lucky there was no wind and sun was shining. Zanders were not in the hitting mood. We caught 9 fishes of which legal size over 37 cm fishes were three: 38, 40 and 42 cm. All the fishes were caught with Uto spoon and a piece of smelt as bait. Two kilos small perches was our side catch.

Perches hit like crazy. No empty holes during all day fishing. Fishes were in 2-12 meters depths. It looked like fishes swim everywhere and as thick 2-3 meters schools. Osku caught two nice perches just under the ice. All others fished with balance jigs only Eero used vertical jigs, but the results were the same. Pity, most of the fishes were small 100-150 g, but everyone caught perches enough in size to make files, too. Kari's catch was  about 15 kg, the biggest  480 g. SFM-toimitus's bag weighted  5,2 kilos, the others had about the same amount. Very few perches were over 300 g. The weather was nice and sunny, only the wind made hands to freeze every now and then.

Parainen 21.1.
MarkkuR +co

The first trip to fish burbots gave to our group of 5  persons only one  0.8 kg fish to make soup of. Herring worked as bait but not the xmastime slightly salted whitefish. Who has a couple of kilos smelts? We have now found in two winters quite a lot small burbots, but where are the big ones?

Naantali, Luonnonmaa 19.1.

On the ice from  9.30 pm to 15 am. We fished only with balance jigs. Nils Masters in colors purple stripes (87), golden stripes- yellow-green (84) and black-red- golden stripes (86) fished quite nicely. Fishes in size to take  (+200 g) were in  7-10 meters, under  6 meters depths were only smallies. Pasi caught a zander and Osku a pike. The catch all together was over ten kilos perches, the biggest ones about 350 g.

Our flyfishing club had the traditional championships of icefishing whitefishes. Fifteen competitors tried to take the Cup home. Whitefish, seatrout and rainbow trouts were the points giving species. If these fishes were not caught, then all fishes gave points. Fishing time was from 9 pm to 14 am. (I had to leave at 13 am). No whitefishes were caught, Ilkka had one already in his hand , but slipped it back to the hole. Me and some others lost whitefishes under the icecover. Ari caught with mormuska a 35 cm zander. So, Ilkka, the winner, had mixed species of fishes 17 kg, Mika, the second, 6 kg. Ilkka was superior! Next year again!

Velkua 18.1.
SFM-toimitus, Jari, Timo and Pena

No zanders in the area, where we fished. Pena had  4 and Jari 3, but all were too small and released. Perches we caught quite properly. Mostly they were small, anyway Jari had one plastic bag full of good size fishes (13,8 kg, some fishes from Pena and SFM-toimitus, too) and SFM-toimitus (most fishes  +200 g) and Timo had half a bag each. The active perches hit in 2-4 meters water in front of rushes on balance jigs with eye or maggot baits. The biggest one over 590 g perch caught Pena. He caught with vertical jig a nice 2,1 kg female burbot, too. SFM-toimitus lost two seatrouts, the second was already under the hole, but did not come to the ice. Lifting hook at home does not help much, when about three kilos fish is on line. Trouts took Karismax herring colored balance jig with fisheye.

The ice is now mostly 10 cm thick, but streaming places are almost open. Big perches were hard to find, about every fifth was in size to take with. Of them only few reached 300 g. Hard working gave to everyone of us a plastic bag full of fishes big enough to be cleaned.

Piikkio, Harvaluoto 17.1.

Perches were in  3,5 m depth. I did not find any real hot spots. Anyway my bag was filled with 4 kilos of perches. To make my cat happy I fishes two kilos of roaches, too.

Sarkisalo 17.1.
OlliT
ja Ari

Trying to find new zander and perch places in Sarkisalo. Ari fished zanders, I found a school of perches and caught 6 kilos of them. Ari caught 8 zanders, of which only two were legal over 37 cm size. Fishes did not eat really good, but anyhow we caught fish to eat. In the evening we tried to fish burbots with baitfish, but not a slightest hit.

In the afternoon icefishing perches 1,5 hours on the sea. Fishes were in the mood. We took 15 perches with, medium 200g. A nice meal waiting!

Icefishing pikes = showing lures to critical long noses. In the morning Niko and Nikolai drilled tens of holes near the rushes, along the day they made some tens more. ( I wonder, if they spent their evening in training center lifting weights?) The first good hit began at ten pm.

Niko and a two kilos pike, which hit on smelt colored balance jig Kaimaani made by Niko himself.

In the afternoon the prey was on every now and then. SFM-toimitus caught 1 pike, Pena and Nikolai 3 each and Niko 8 pcs, of which he caught two after three am, when we others were on the way  home. Of 15 pikes five had to go to act as stars in our dinner tables, others swim on. The best lures: Niko's balance jig Kaimaani, specially the colors tiger and smelt and in the twilight dusk red head. Nils Masters Jigging Shad gave three fishes. The biggest one of the trip was Niko's 2,2 kilos pike, Pena and Niko had each a two kilos fish, too.So this time there were no giants, but nice fishes anyway in the best size for eating.

Nils Masters Jigging Shad got three marks to the statistics.

Simrishamn, Sweden week 2
JohanA

Fishing in  Simrishamn is now top quality. If you want to handle really nice salmon it is the right place to fight with them now. Next week I begin guiding in Simrishamn, where during last month fishing has been better as ever. Watertemperature is very high +5-7 centigrades concerning the time of the year. It seems, that all the salmon of The Baltic Sea are now preying in Simrishamn waters. It has been very usual, that a boat catches 10-20 fishes per day, many doubles, triples and even four fishes have been on the lines at the same time. Salmon move now in large schools, where the medium size is  4-8 kilos, often  10-11 kilos fishes are caught, too. The biggest salmon last week was exact 13 kilos. A lot of nice size seatrouts have been caught, too. Down riggers are the right method at this moment. The lures have to swim in   20-30 meters dephts. The line has to be so short as possible. That is a reason, why the hits of the fishes feel gloriously heavy. Now I move to Simrishamn to fish and to guide there two next months. Winter is low season, so my prices are now cheap. A two days trip is now with special  price. Near by the harbour is available quality lodging, too. Fishing reports of Simrishamn are in internet: http://www.simrishamnstrolling.se/

Showing icefishing jigs to perches. Cloudy dark day, temperature + 2 centigrades. Soon we need minus degrees, otherwise we have to find our rod and reel equipments. The ice was much weaker as on monday. Pena fished with vertical and balance jigs added with natural bait (eyes of perches), SFM-toimitus fished only with balance jigs with colored tripple hook. Pena caught 7,5 kilos perches, he took small fishes to make soup, too. SFM-toimitus had 5,8 kilos file size perches. Only about ten of perches were over 300 g, the biggest 380 g. One small zander was released.

Icefishing pikes. Nine fishes up, the biggest 3,5 kiloa. I lost about ten pikes. Self made balance jigs were hot lures, best colours: tiger, red head and smelt.

On the ice at about nine o'clock am when it was bright enough. The ice was ten cm. The weather was freezing, temperature was 5 minus centigrades and wind blowed from southeast 15 m/s. Otherwise the clothing hold us warm, but hands got cold, when we had to handle fishes without gloves. We fished to one o'clock pm, then we had to go to warm ourselves. Nils Master balance jig Jigger 2 in colour parrot ( 32) and with green-orange-yellow  colored triple hook under was the best lure. Four hours of fishing gave two plastic bags full of perches. The biggest was 420 g and we caught about thirty fishes over 300 g.

The wind was so chilly, that perches were deep frozen in some minutes.

Kemio 11.1.

Me and six students of our Fishing Institute made an No Fish trip to Gammelby bay. Happy moments we had when grilling sausages. It also helped us a little when we heard, that even experienced zander fishers had a poor fishing day. JP Pohjola was icefishing pikes in  Sarkisalo, the result was only two about one kilos smallies.

Peimari, Sauvo 11.1.
TomiL

When driving to Peimari early in the morning, I had in my mind large schools of big and hungry zanders. On the ice the truth was a bit different. No zanders in familiar places, only two ten inches smallies came up and went back. It looked like all others had quiet day, too. Many fishers packed their equipments and left home already at noon.

Karuna 11.1.

All day icefishing gave 14 perches, max 300 g, 3 too small zanders and one minisize roach. If the show goes on like this I have to put an advertisement on newspapers: Quality icefishing equipments seek new good home...

Icefishing pikes on a bay east of Hessund. We had drilled over 100 holes before the sun rose. This time we were on the fishing spots early enough.  Fishes were not co-operative, they perhaps have the winterfast on. The saldo of the whole day fishing was Osku's 1,5 kilos pike and Niko's  heavy hit and lost fish. Perhaps the reasons for unwilling pikes were, that it had snowed all night long and the day was dark. Normally this place has given a lot of old stinkers. The hot lure was a nicely finished balance jig made by SFM-toimitus. This jig model is specially developed for icefishing pikes.

Kemio 6.1.

From darkness to darkness icefishing zanders in Kemio. Fishes ate quite poorly. Ari had one good hole with 9 fishes, othewise the fishes were careful and scattered. Legal size fishes 5 pcs, totally about 20.

A day running after perches. Ice is now about 15 cm. Fishes were eating moderately, only once we found a hungry school of perches. We caught only a few big ones. Smelts were hitting on everything that moved.  I lost my favourite vertical jig, it is now hanging on jaws of a pike! Tomorrow we will try again...

Parainen 4.1.

Trying to flyfish seatrouts, but I was about one week too late. With boat the fishing had been possible but not from shores. There were so many icefloats that fishing was impossible. It is time to find my icefishing equipments...

Tammela, Vaha-Ilmetty and Loppi, Iso-Melkutin 4.1.
TomiL

Trying to icefish pikes in the morning on the lake Vaha-Ilmetyllä. The result was one good size pike and a perch. In the afternoon visiting near by the lake  Iso-Melkutin, and trying to find whitefishplaces. I caught only some small perches. Ice is on the lakes now about 20 cm thick.

Kemio 4.1.
OlliT
and Ari

We opened the icefishing season in Kemio. There was ice about 10-15 cm. Zanders were eating, but not very eagerly. Legal size fishes we caught 5 pcs, of which the biggest was about 800 g. The best hitting time was between 10.00 and 12.00 o'clock.
