Northern Norway week 35
Nikolai

When half of my trip was gone the saldo was almost zero. The tributary of Alta river, Eibyelva, saved my trip. First this 64 cm seatrout and then two searun arctic chars. The bigger was almost a kilo. This river gave a really possitive impression.

Sysma Tainionvirta 28-29.8.
PeteA and Rauno

We were on the hot spot at 10.00. The first hour gave only one about 40 cm baby trout. Released. Our hobby was otherwise ok, but a little rain made it a bit uncomfortable.

Two hours of only whipping the water, then I saw a 1,5-2,0 kg raibow standing downstreams. OK, I served a fly just in front of the fish. It was about 15 cm beneath the surface and stood there quite still and was not interested in anything. First I tried with streamers in different colors. I tried Klinkhamer and surfacehangers, nothing. Once the fish followed a zonker, but changed its mind at the last moment. I fished almost my fly-boxes empty. Then I found, that a small yellow insect is hatching. A yellow dryfly on and a cast. Immediately, when the fly floated over the fish a hit, but by. Second cast, hit and FISH ON! A short fight and the fish was in my net. "this we can call a win of hard working or long plan tactics." shouted Rane. He had listened my my mumbling and swearing while I tried to get the hitting. Anyway it was a 1.6 kg rainbow. Even the fishermen has to eat, so next we had our lunch, beansoup. It took about an hour, we wondered the weather and spoke all things you perhaps could call even brown.

Back to the river. First rapid, a car and an other one. Four guys fishing the rapid, that is too many even witout us.The rain had stopped and other fishermen had woke up, too. Next rapid, there were two men standing in the river, too. Then I remembered a place uostreams, which I had not visited in about 3-4 years. I tried to force from my bean the correct route to this place. We had to check up three roads before we hit the right road.

And there was a bleak hunt on! Nice paths cruising above the rapid in the mirror. First cast from the stones by the shoreline to the first underwater stone. Stripping with a black streamer and the fly got a ride. LOST! Second cast and a path followed, but no hit. Rane fished a bit downstreams. My third or fourth cast and again a path and again lost. Duck were perhaps wondering my heavy finnish language. I waded forward and a new cast. First a path, then FIH ON! This fish tested my skills of tirering. It went down the rapid. Finally the fish in my net after five minutes fight. A raibow about two kilos. We found, that all the fishes in this place were rainbows and good size, too.

We were wondering, if they had put these fishes this summer 6-7 km downstreams and the fished had run so long upsteams. Two and half hours we fished on, then came the darkness and we had to go away. Rauno had 2 rainbows and me 3 pcs. We lost or released six more. That was a wonder how many rainbows there were in so small area. I know for sure, that they were not put just there. They have swum from down- or upstream.

Anice trip in good company is always fun. I have to fish this place once more and to take my wife with, too...

My own fishing was not so important on this trip. Students were learning flyfishing and their outdoor skills. Two empty grayling sessions in rain. I fished with larvas. Mr. Viljanen told , that earlier they had caught nice graylings in this week. The saver was a 1.3 kg, it was an easy fishing situation and fun fight.

Five guys learned the basics of flyfishing, specially the larva-techniques. That looked like quite easy to learn. I lost two nice rainbows, when fishing upstreams. The other one went because of my poor knot. A 33 cm grayling proved that they are there, too. I saw a really nice fish
(a trout?) tailing many times and some smaller ones, too. Water level really low.

Espoo, Lehtisaaret 28.8.
JuhaL, Mikko and Matias

Fishing 19-21. First with a spoon a one kilos pike. That was not in the program, so I changed to vertical jig Nautilus and worm bait. First I caught perches every now and then, but finally they were hitting all the time. My friends added worm in their lures, spinners and jigs, then both had fishes on all the time, too. Nautilus was number one, but yellow grub was good, too. It took the biggest fishes. I caught my first ever baltic herring in these waters, too. 10 liters bucket was on its half, when we ended. The small ones we released.

Eibyelva gave a 64 cm silvery seatrout. I was quite stressed, no net and the fly was dressed on barbless hook. The fish took rubber-legged black leech...

Kautokeino waters are like dead. Water level very low and the temperature is icy. All week long northern winds. Cabardas and other places are very quiet. I will fish yet Kautokeinoelva.

Espoo, Pyorasaari ja Pieni Vasikkasaari 27.8.
JuhaL

In the morning at nine a small perch from 12 meters with vertical jig Nautilus and wormbait. Three hours later a small pike in shallow water. Water seems to be quite warm on the surface and heavy wind made fishing difficult. Perhaps this was the reason for not so good catch. Tomorrow I try again...

Pernaja 23.-24.8
JuhaL, Mikko and Matias

fishing in Pernaja archipelago with my friends. Four hours in heavy rain hunting pikes. Saldo 10 fishes (0,5-1,5 kg). My holiday is over.....

Tammela, Porras 20.8
JuhaL

Fishing the Porras and Ilmetty rivers,, result one 10 cm pike and a perch. I had to stop fishing, because duck hunters were an obvious danger factor. A small pond gave almost kilos pike.

Petajavesi Piesalankoski 18.8
JuhaL

Jeah! Holiday is on and it is raining. Piesalarapids is one of the finest rapids I have seen in years. Water level is ok. WithMa-Leech, Kuusamo spinner and a small jig Icaught about 20 perches. Trouts were not in the rapids or they were not co-operative.

Kylmaluoma 23.8.
JaniO

The first day of Flyfishing Finnish Championships. My result was poor, three lake session and all NF. On the lake only two boats caught fishes, five rainbows.

Brandö 23.8.
SFM-toimitus, Ernst, Rolf and Hanspeter

Started fishing at six o'clock in the morning. Three hours of jigging gave over fourty perches 250 g or bigger. Hanspeter caught a 39 cm zander. Some pike broke our lines (no leaders). Motor Oil and other brownish four inches grubs were the best lures.

One of the biggest, about 400 g

Sammati, Kirmusjarvi18-19.8.
PeteA and Rane

The fishes were not in the mood., sunny weather and no wind. We caught some nice perches and two about two kilos pikes. The water is perhaps still too warm. We tried all possible hot spots with all possible lures, deep and shallow water, casting and trolling.

Loimaa, Hirvikoski 21.8.
TomiL

Fishing my home river Loimijoki. Tried to catch with flies rapacious carps. I started at 21.00 and fished till darkness came on about one hour. I had a lot of happenings. The waterflow is now weak, so the bigger fishes were missing. Many kilo class were hunting bleaks. I released two about one kilo fishes and one I lost. Hits and byhits were many. I fished with Zonkers, casting crossstream and fast stripping. Bright red flies worked now.

In the morning fishing the river. A lot of small graylings. In the afternoon the lake gave me nothing. Today on the lake 3 contacts and a landed rainbow. I am finding now the right flies.

Kylmaluoma 20.8.
JaniO

In the morning testfishing the lake. Problems. I had only contacts with small whitefishes, that was all. Others did not have happenings either. Some were fishing the river, but I have no info, about what happened there. The lake session will be important in Championships!

Asmall whitefish-bond 17.8.
JaniO

Eveningfishing whitefishes. The fishes were now more active as earlier. I saw a lot of tailing fishes all around the bond. I caught one 31 cm fish with brown buzzer fly. The cooler weathers make fishes more active!

Teno week 33
HarriM

The saldo of this week 3 grilses and a 10,3 kg salmon. One over 20 kg male fish on, but... I am still speechless! The salmon took the lure good, but then ran upstream and so long.

Karkkila 15.-16.8.
OlliT and Tapsa

Again flyfishing in Karkkila rivers. First evening we tried the rainbows of Saavariver. We saw a lot of fishes in clear water, but they were reluctant to take our flies. The only catch was a 29 cm grayling. The evening we spent in Pitkalarapid camping place, had a good dinner cooked with Trangia, then sleeping. To Saavariver we went at 12.00. Rainbows were now active. Tapsa tried to take photos while I tried to hook fishes with different dryflies. Finally I had to tie on a small black Leech. That was an offer they could not resist, when served just in front of the mouth. Tapsa caught with his own dressing Water Spider two rainbows. Total result in Saava was four rainbows plus 29 and 30 cm graylings. Rest of the day we fished in Pitkalarapids, where graylings were in the mood. We caught 5 over 30 cm fishes, the longest 35 cm and one rainbow. The best fly for graylings was Bead Head Pupa.

Isojoki and Merikarvianjoki 8.-10.8.
MarkkuR, Olli and Tapsa

While we drove from Kynasjoki to Vanhakyla, we got an idea of a triple competition in catching fishes. Grayling, trout and rainbow gave points. Me and Tapsa caught already in Kynasriver over 50 cm rainbows. Isojoki gave to each of us legal size graylings (35 cm). In friday evening the hit was modest, but saturday morning Olli found many nice graylings about 1 km downstream of the camping place. In friday evening we had some nice trouts, too. My biggest was only 38 cm, but Olli and Tapsa release both 40 cm beauties.

Saturday evening we fished Merikarviariver. Rainbows were passive. We fished carefully the Lankoski rapid area, result one rainbow to Olli and Tapsa each.

The competition was won by Tapsa, who caught legal size fishes in all three species and fishes in all three rivers.

Parainen, the bridge of Lillholmen 11.8.
SFM-toimitus, Pierre, Samuel (FR), Hannu and sons

The hours learning fishing in the middle of the day. Samuel (8 years) caught the first fishes of his life: about 20 roaches and a 400 g rudd. He will be a exellent fisherman, so intensive was his fishing. Perches were reluctant to take anything, even a living bait gave nothing.

Kynasjoki 8.-9.8.
MarkkuR and co

We caught rainbows in shallow and fast running water. Olli and me had one up each and lost three. Tapsa landed five and lost two. All fishes C&R.

Awhitefish pond nearby Turku 7.8.
JaniO

1,5 hours casting blindly in heavy wind.. No whitefishes, but some perches. In the neighbouring bond a small pike with Beadhead Pupa. The water is still too warm, but perhaps the better days will come???

Inari, Juutua 27.7. - 1.8.
TomiL and Jori

First time fishing in Juutuariver upper parts. Water level was low here, too, but that was no problem with fishing. We fished nighttime. The best hitting time of graylings was at 00-02. We caught a lot of graylings, but not any over 40 cm. Every evening we got some 35 cm fishes and fried them on open fire. The best place seems to be the end of Haapakoski, but there were every evening too much fishermen. We tried to fish those lake-running (Inari lake) trouts one night in Ritakoski, but no results. So we had to trust on local fishermen who told that the run begings at 10.8.
