We were mainly after the old rainbows and graylings. New rainbows were not in the mood, but the old ones saved the trip of our group of 6 persons from Fishing Intitute . Some hits and losts, but finally we caught 5 rainbows, biggest ones 2.5 and 2.0 kgs. I had birthday, and the fishing gods allowed me as a present to hold 20 min a about 4 kilos rainbow in fast water. The rod was class 4, so I had to find a peaceful place to land the fish. The fish ran once more downriver, and took another fish with him. Finally there was only a quarter kilos bream hanging in the sidefly and the big one went away with a nice icelandic sheepwool fly. Graylingfishing was good: 7 fishes 35-39 cm to our group.

USA, eastcoast, Boston area week 19
JakeK

Ihave tried to fish all kinds of finanimals here on the new continent. For the present I have stayed in flyfishing, though it has sometimes been hard. Baitfishermen and rod and reel fishermen have caught plenty of fishes just beside me, and I have stayed on No Fish line with flyfishing.

Before last week I had been fishing in a small river, where I caught a small rainbow, some roach looking fishes and a couple of sunfishes. Their colors are like perches have, but they look like small breams. The only one, who has taken my fly in the sea, has been a crab. It tried to clip my fingers, when I released it from my fly.

Friday evening I went again to the sea shore. I am not very interested in these local rivers: water level is low and the put and take fishes are very small. I was there at the shoreline about 18.30 o'clock, the tide was at its highest and the wind was blowing directly against my face. So, not the best possible conditions to flyfish. Waders on and I took my new selfbuilt Sage, and let' go! Again hours of no happenings. The water turned to ebb, but the the wind was still raging. Some fellow fisherman was casting on a sandpoint, and he got fishes every now and then. Finally he left about 22.00, and I sneaked to the point. Casting was fighting with the wind, but luckily it was blowing sidewards. At last at about 23.00 there was a hit on the line, smile, big, big smile. Some hard kicks and then the fish followed quite easily. Lights on, and F.... , the big catch was a flounder hooked on its side.

The adrenaline level was high, back to the point. Finally at 23.30 a good hit, the kicks were different as earlier, pleasently heavy kicks. A while good fighting and then I saw a nice size of fish, and important the fly was in its mouth. I had to think a while, but then I realized that this pal is a weakfish. Many of my fishing friends had told to me, that weakfish is good fish to eat, so I blessed the fish with my priest. Official measuring gave these results: 28 inches = 70 cm. I did not have with me the weight, but I estimated that the fish was about 3,5-4,0 kilos. The fly was black #3/0 deceiver. The weakfish tasted not bad, I'd say rather excellent, when I grilled it.

Jake and the weakfish
Jake and the weakfish

Anyway, the fishing should get better and better from now on. Weakfishes are there, and there should be stripers and bluefishes, too. At the end of June the False albacore, small tunas, should arrive to these waters. They say, that these fishes take about 200 meters backing out, when they hit. I am just waiting... Tight lines to everyone! :-)

Askainen 24.5.
Michel (CH), Hannu and SFM-toimitus

Asnake (non-poisonous) moved by hands from the yard of our holiday house to the rushes. The weather was perhaps too beautiful for seatrouts. Not a hit. The sea was totally calm. Two hours hunting pikes in front of the bay areas. I think the boneheads are still deep inside the bays.

Serious zanderfishing from 19.00 to 00.30 o'clock. 14 legal size (+37 cm) zanders. Too small ones about 60 pcs. Fluo yellow 4 inches grub was hot bait, but deep runner wobblers gave better utility ratio (5 legal, one minor).

Tampere, Flyfishing Finnish Championchips, Qalification Trial, Julkulake 19.5.

JaniO

There was 19 competitors, who had come to the cold and windy lake trying to reach one of three final competition places. The competition began at 9.00 o'clock and ended about 16.40. There was three two hours periods. Between the periods there was good time to grill sausages and talk about flyfishing. The atmosphere of qualification was genial, still nobody showed his hot flies to fellow competitors. I had only two bites, so I did not have too much to show or tell. Anyway, there was some real flyfishermen, best of them Ville Vainio, who caught in two periods two rainbow trouts in each period. Unbelievable, when You think, that second and third caught in whole competition only one fish each.

The three best in Tampere qualification: 1. Ville Vainio 2. Jari Jamalainen 3. Antero Halonen

Congratulations and success in finals! We will meet in Julkulake again next year.

Parainen, Mielisholm 19.5.

Nautela 17.5.
JaniO

Fast trip to Nautela, I was fishing from 21.10 to 22.20 o'clock. Water level was perfect, but heavy wind made fishing a little uncomfortable. Saldo 8 small trouts,of which one was bigger than others, 39 cm. Still missing the first, 40 cm legal fish in this year. Tomorrow, day after tomorrow, next week.. the time will show. Anyway a nice trip!

Kaarina, Kuusisto 17.5.

Brändo 9.-12.5.
MarkkuR

LSUK, our fishing club, made the springtrip to Brando, 18 persons in seven boats were fishing. Friday the wind turned from north to south, and fishes were seeking new places. All the weekend the hit was poor.

The best result in thursday had SFM-toimitus, who trolled a 5.1 kgs seatrout and a 5.5 kgs Pike. The best way to catch oikes was trolling, in sunday casting, too. Small pikes we did not count. Pikes 3-5.6 kg:n we released about twenty, really big ones were missing. olli's trout was the only one. Rainbow trouts we caught: 2.5 - 2.0 -1.9 -1.7 - 0.6kg ones.

This time I was enjoying the fishing = only flyfishing was allowed. Me and JP Pohjola we drove by electric motor and fished with floating rings.

Markku floating

In the saturday morning I made my pike record with flyfishing, 3,7 kgs. The fly was 10 cm blue-silver tinselfly. Jp made NF with 20 cm tinsel. In sunday the big flies were more catchable: JP pikes 3,2 and 4,1 kgs.

In sunday we tried to flyfish seatrouts, too. Blue-silver-yellow supertinsel woke up a fish from 10 meters distance.

Uusikaupunki water areas 9.5.
JaniO and Markku T

We sailed out at 13.00 o'clock with a beautiful wooden handled with tar boat model merikarvia. It was handled with tar. Destination was The Koivisto island and water by it. When we were there , we found, that someone had built a new holiday house on yhe island. So we sailed to the Island Hummi. A while fishing: I had a perch and Markku had a hit.

About three o'clock we decided to check up one more place. When we got there, we saw a couple of seaeagles to fly up in the sky, and over ten gray herons. Markku took the binoculars and began to look the birdlife. I took my rod and began to flyfish. First cast and I caught a nice pike: 82 cm, 4750 gr. It was time to leave home, where we were at 17.00.

Askainen 8.5.

Karkkila, Katlakoski 4.5.

In the morning heavy rain and thunder. Water in the Rapid Pitkala was like muddy porridge, so we drove to the Rapid Katla. Result was trouts 32 & 25 cm with minimudller, with adult stonefly dressing (#14) a couple of hits and losses, one of them was about legal size (40 cm). My friend caught two graylings and bleaks.

Brändö 3.-5.5
Matias + co

Satuday morning we started at the northern parts of Ava area in a bay opening to Kihti. Only two small pikes were co-operating with us. The weather was good, sunshine and the wind was blowing from southeast. Next we fished the bays southwards seeking seatrouts, but no success. The wind turned blowing from north, while we fished the shores of Kihti sailing southwards, no contacts. We drifted several times over the reef by the big Ava bridge, but nothing. From that on we trolled to the Hotel bay: One small pike and some hits or rather pushes.

When we came back from shopping in village store, a heavy rain and thunder forced us to get shelter in holiday village restaurant. The hails were size of fingertips. When the storm was over, we fished the western parts of Bjornholma area. Only one follower.

Sunday morning was again northern winds and rain, the weather was alike all day long. From Ava bridge to Bjornholma reef nothing happened. At the side of Kihti in Hotel bay, about ten o'clock, we caught first rainbow trout. Because we had more of some nice hits, we fished this area eagerly. Final result was three more rainbows in this place. At three o'clock it was time to clean our cottage. This was no success story, but anyway we caught something. All the rainbows were caught with different baits, so the colors did not matter with them. Seatrouts were missing. We heard, that one trolling team caught one trout in this weekend. Friday someone had been lucky: a seatrout 5,1 kilos, the exact place we did not hear.

Kustavi, Katanpaa-Kiparluoto area 3.-5.5
MarkkuK+ co

We were fishing from friday evening to sunday. The trip was a real scout adventure. We adult men were sleeping in a tent in Katanpaa. Weather in friday was a bit too beautiful for fishing. We caught one two kilos pike in a bay between Katanpaa and Kotimaanniemi, no trouts seen.

Saturday was more windy. In the morning we caught again a pike in a bay by Ootskeri. On the side of Kihti by a half-island a small seatrout took the spoon. No nice size trouts seen.

Sunday we fished in front of Kiparluoto. We casted two nice bays. The weather was wicked, cold, heavy wind and raining. We tried to fish with troutspoons, but no fish seen. I caught in a shallow and windy place two three kilos pikes with two casts. The place was just by the open sea. We thought, that this area was more like a troutplace.

Results in seatroutsfishing were once again poor, even we tried really hard. The weather was perhaps too cold and windy!

JaniO

One and half hour checking these home rapids: two trouts, but under minimum 40 cm plus one lost one, probably over 40 cm. The water level is good!

Pomarkku, the River Kynas 4.5.
Petrus and SFM-toimitus

The fever of the opening day: about 80 fishermen trying their luck. The waterlevel was high for flyfishing with floating lines. We had to use fast sinking leaders and too much lead on the tippets. Rod and reel fishermen had a nice fishing day, and those flyfishermen, who had sinkind lines on their reels, too.

We started at rapid Vaara at noon (official time to begin). At the lower parts of the rapid we saw a fisherman to catch a nice about 3 kilos rainbow trout with a Rapala wobbler. A bit later one guy caught a about 40 cm grayling with a spinner. We wandered downstream to Saukua , but no contacts with fishes. The heaven opened and showers of water fell down. Heavy rain and thunder was the afternoon and evening weather from this moment on.

SFM-toimitus and the rainbow trout, who took yellow Zonker Photo by Petrus

Next we drove to Rapid Kynas. More lead on the tippet and I had my first contact with a rainbow trout. It hit on yellow Zonker (#8), but I lost it, when the fish jumped. After a while I had a new fish on. It gave a nice show and fight, but finally it was my catch: about 2 kilos nice rainbow with the tippet 0,18 mm, that makes your heart to jump and beat.

Soon she is in the net! Photo by Petrus
Soon she is in the net!

The heaven was really open, thunder and lightnings made fishing dangerous and unpleasent, so we drove to the camping place of the Rapid Kukon. While we were eating and drinking coffee a junior member of local fishing club caught a two kilos rainbou just by the camping place. We fished then the lower part of the rapid: nothing. A local flyfisherman had caught his three fishes limit in some hours there, secret was the sinking line. With no results we fishes yet the upper parts, too. A flyfisherman had caught there a over 40 cm grayling with 5 cm streamerfly. At the other sider of the river on a tree there was hanging the bones of two nice size rainbows.

Reijo Viljanen, the president of fishing club Pomarkun Kalajussit, told, that at the autumn 2001 they put a lot of graylings, size 35 to 50 cm, to the river. Let us hope, that the fishes had nice weddings this spring, and that the beasts do not disturb them too much. And let us wish, that there is no pH peaks now in the river to destroy the spawning results of the graylings. The mother fishes are the same family as the "old" graylings in the river.

Askainen 4.5.
Hannu and "Mr. Pipe"

About two hours checking, if zanders are already hitting twisters. Result: 5 zanders (pikeperch) and 3 perches. I think, that we need one more week the water to warm up enough.

Saka and Bude

Two hours of fishing whitefishes. Only a couple of careful bites, but NF.
