In
the year 1998 Pasi
Kinnunen made a trip to Iceland with
his family and friends. They had in mind to hike on the lava fields, too.
Pasi thought: There is no wood in Iceland, so it is impossible to make
nice open fire. That means: Camping is then unperfect. For this trip Pasi
made the first versions of SandwichFire.
Later
Pasi and SandwichFire got a silver medal in the Geneve Exhibition of
Inventors. This product is a handy version of living fire. In finnish
outdoor-culture it is self-vident that we make a open fire, whenever it is
possible. Nowadays, specially in southern parts of Finland, building
a fire of natural materials is no more so easy, because You have to have
the land-owner´s permission. Only in emergency circumstances it is
allowed to make fire. Hikers have normally in their pack a light camp
stove. But then the fuel is needed, and normally it is metanol. It happens
that all Your food tastes metanol. SandwichFire is natural material, wood,
and the lighter strip is saturated with natural tar. So, SandwichFire is a
good alternative: no more metanol smelling packs.

SandwichFire
is packed in a cardboard box. In the underer part there is this strip
saturated with tar and a box of matches. The upper part has a small,
narrow hole, which works as fire channel. Two wooden sticks are the kettle
holders. The geat advantage of This packfire is, that everything burns.
You do not have to carry back home anything - Look that the ashes are cool
and cover them.

There
is three sizes of SandwichFire. Camper burns about 45 minutes, Maxi
burns about one hour. In the picture You can see the new Light
SandwichFire, It burns about half an hour, so an individual hiker or
fisherman cooks with it a couple of cups coffee or a warm soup. Second
alternative to use Light is to use it as lighter for larger fire, when the
weather is rainy and wet.
